One Health

Definition

What is 'One Health'?

It depends. Which aspect of this multi-disciplinary approach to global public health do you want to focus on? Are you mainly interested in research, implementation, administration, or policies?

The professional field you come from might also determine how you define 'One Health'. Are you specialized in veterinary or human medicine, basic or applied research, a certain infectious disease or general  epidemiology and public health?

Most of the definitions, however, are similar to the following, which had been declared by the European Union (EEAS, 2016):

"‘One Health’ (OH) is an integrated approach to health that focuses on the interactions between animals, humans and their diverse environments. It encourages collaborations, synergies and cross-fertilisation of all professional sectors and actors in general whose activities may have an impact on health."
